History
Mr. Balwant Chugh, owner and founder of Boutique Uma recognized the need of a South Asian saree store in Montreal and decided to open the very first saree store; Boutique Uma, known as the “Trend Setters” was established in 1971, with a store size of only 200 sq. feet.
As the popularity of the store grew, Boutique Uma expanded its product line, and became more than just the traditional saree store and diversified its collection by offering salwar-kameez, dress materials, bridal outfits, wedding sarees, kurtis, tunics, lehngas, men’s kurta-pyjama sets, dhotis, children outfits, Indian jewelry, handbags, cushion covers, bedcovers, wall hangings, sweaters, deities’ statues, temples, trimmings, scarves, belly dancing accessories, and a lot more.
This extensive and exquisite assortment of items is not only catered to the South Asian community, but over the past two decades, other ethnic groups have appreciated the Indian clothing for its colorfulness and elegance.
Boutique Uma now has its own manufacturing facility in India, and are also wholesalers to stores in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and a lot of the local stores in Montreal as well.
