Dr. Amin Kherani is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary, and Partner and Co-founder of Calgary Retina Consultants and the Southern Alberta Eye Center.
He pursued his undergraduate and medical school training at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, graduating with distinction. He remained in Edmonton to complete his ophthalmology residency followed by his vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City in 2000.
Upon his return to Alberta, Dr. Kherani co-founded Calgary Retina Consultants in 2000 where he specializes in the treatment of disorders of the retina which commonly include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions and uveitis. He has a particular passion for surgical challenges including retinal detachments, cataracts, macular holes, membranes and ocular trauma.
In addition to his active medical and surgical practice, Dr. Kherani maintains a substantial academic and research program, serving as a principal investigator or co-investigator in numerous local, national and international research studies. Dr. Kherani has made significant contributions to the medical literature, having authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals, original reports and abstracts. He is also a well-respected lecturer who frequently delivers research and case presentations at conferences in Canada and internationally.
In 2010, Dr. Kherani co-founded the Southern Alberta Eye Center (SAEC), where he currently practices in this state-of-the-art infrastructure to support comprehensive diagnostic services, ophthalmic care and outpatient surgery. Additionally, he continues to work in collaboration with Alberta Health Services – within the hospital centred program supporting the retina clinics and operating rooms, primarily based at the Rockyview General Hospital and also the pediatric retina service within the Calgary neonatal intensive care units and Alberta Children’s Hospital.
With a special interest in teaching and a commitment to education, Dr. Kherani frequently spends time instructing and lecturing fellows, ophthalmology residents and undergraduate students. He was instrumental in developing the Residency Training Program at the University of Calgary in 2003, serving as the first Residency Director and also developed and Co-directed the University’s Retina Fellowship Program.
Dr. Kherani was awarded the teacher of the year award for 2014 and has been a strong advocate of the ophthalmology program and its local development. He also volunteers as the President of the University Eye Foundation, a charitable organization providing support for local ophthalmic education, research and program development, helping to educate and advance young physicians through networking, clinical and research experiences.
